Mullins sets sights on next season with Lossiemouth
After skipping possible Punchestown options, trainer will refocus on the 2025-26 campaign.

Willie Mullins is looking forward to next season with Lossiemouth after ruling his star mare out of the Punchestown Festival.

Winner of 11 of her 14 starts, the grey successfully defended her crown in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last month before following up in the Aintree Hurdle in early April.

With connections having decided against running against the geldings in the Boodles Champion Hurdle at Punchestown on Friday, she was widely expected to round off her campaign by bidding for back-to-back wins in Saturday’s SBK Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle, but was not among the confirmations on Tuesday.

Explaining her absence, Mullins said: “She misses Punchestown but she will be back next season. I don’t think we’ll be going to France with her.

“It’s disappointing to miss the last day of the season but she’ll be fine in a week or two and we’ll prepare her for next season.”

Despite a smattering of rain drops ahead of the shootout for pole, Mercedes elected to send Hamilton out on slick rubber, and it proved to be the right call.

In contrast, Vettel, and his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, were both on track using the intermediate tyre, and they had to stop for slicks.

By the time Vettel was ready to post a fast lap, a rain shower left the German exposed, and after he made a mistake by running off the track at the Spoon Curve in the damp conditions, he finished more than four seconds adrift of Hamilton.

Raikkonen was fourth. The shower intensified, and there would be no challenge to Hamilton, who cruised to his 80th career pole.

“I never in a million years though I would get to 80 poles,” he said. “(Ferrari’s mistake) adds to the championship momentum.

“It is so difficult to make the right call, but that is another real big difference that we as a team have made this year.

“When it comes to being under pressure, and making the right calls, that is why were are the best team in the world.”
