Euro 2024 Spotlight

By Wayne Gardiner 22/05/2024

With Euro 2024 fast approaching, we caught up PA Media’s Deputy Sports Editor Wayne Gardiner to ask him what will be the must-cover stories at the Euros, his predictions, and what PA’s plans for the tournament include?

What do you think will be the must-cover stories that football fans will be engaging with at this year’s Euros?

England! It’s been said before, but England may never have had a better chance of winning the tournament. Phil Foden has been the Premier League’s outstanding player and Jude Bellingham could well be a Champions League winner come the start. How Gareth Southgate gets all his attackers together remains to be seen and his future as England boss will likely be discussed a lot no matter how the tournament goes. Away from England, Scotland’s presence adds extra interest and they play in the opening game against hosts Germany.

Can you give us an idea of what PA’s coverage will entail for the tournament?

Yep. We’ve got two reporters, a video journalist and photographers following England all over Germany, with a video-trained reporter and photographer with Scotland. They’ll be attending every England/Scotland media session, training session and match, with daily words, pictures and video from each camp. All other games will also be covered with reports and quotes, plus news stories on merit throughout the tournament.

What team could be the surprise package of the tournament?

Denmark. Their team have a number of players with experience in the Premier League such as Joachim Andersen, Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Mathias Jensen and Rasmus Hojlund, who has been a highlight in what has been a disappointing season for Manchester United, scoring 16 goals.

What are your predictions for Euro 2024?

Winners – France

Runner-Up – England

Top scorer – Mbappe (France)

Player of the tournament – Mbappe (France)
