Five of the biggest stories in 2023 – and how PA Media covered them

PA Media’s Editor-in-Chief reflects on five of the biggest stories in 2023 so far.

1. Coronation of King Charles III – A moment in history with all the pomp and pageantry, and PA’s unrivalled coverage taking centre stage in the UK and across the world.

King Charles III (front centre) seated in St Edward’s Chair, also known as the Coronation Chair, wearing St Edward’s Crown and holding The Sovereign’s Sceptre with the Dove (in his left hand) and The Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross (in his right hand) during his coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey, London. 2. Cost of living /Strikes – An ever-present story throughout 2023, with inflation high, mortgage rates rising and strike action at a level not seen for more than three decades. And vital throughout we keep explaining to audiences what it all means for them.

Striking junior doctors from British Medical Association take part in a rally in Parliament Square, Westminster, during a 72-hour stoppage in a row with the Government over pay. Picture date: Friday June 16, 2023. Picture by Lucy North (PA)

3. War in Ukraine – So many elements that remain hugely relevant to the UK and Ireland, whether it’s military support, the impact on energy bills, the refugees living here, or the plight of the people back in the warzone.

4. Partygate – PM Rishi Sunak may have wanted a period of stability and calm, but partygate refused to go away and provided a compelling new chapter with the resignation of Boris Johnson. All the more fascinating as a General Election looms over the horizon in 2024.

Police reopen investigation and launch new probe into partygate allegations

5. Nottingham attacks – A truly appalling story. Our journalists on the ground worked hard to establish the facts around what had happened, and responsibly cover the many tributes to the dead and the outpouring of grief in the city.
